Although Ghostface will not be appearing in any films this Halloween season, he wants us to know he exists. The official poster for Scream, which isn’t named Scream 5 or Scream-Colon-Subtitle since that’s how sequels are titled nowadays, was published by Paramount and Spyglass earlier today. Then, on January 14, 2024, Entertainment Weekly released a series of exclusive photos from the film. The cast and crew comments in the article accompanying the images don’t mention anything we haven’t heard previously or simply assumed. (Who’d have imagined that Ghostface begins murdering adolescents in Woodsboro in this one?) Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are directing Scream in place of the late Wes Craven, who directed all of the previous films in the series. As Sidney Prescott, Gale Weathers, and Dewey Riley from the previous chapters, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette return, as does Marley Shelton, who portrayed a deputy in Scream 4. The returning players are joined by an army of young kids I’d never heard of before, as well as Jack Quaid of The Boys. Check out the Scream poster and exclusive photos from Entertainment Weekly below:

The poster is amazing. It’s straightforward, includes Ghostface as a series emblem, and promises a fresh murdering spree. I’d rather see Ghostface than a group of adolescents (or twentysomethings dressed as teens) who are here to be his victims. More significantly, the tagline “It’s always someone you know” emphasizes the film’s mystery, which is one of the greatest aspects of the Scream franchise. These are as much whodunits as they are slasher films, and half the pleasure of your first viewing is piecing together the clues and determining who’s behind the mask and cloak this time. (This is what Scream 3 messed wrong with that dreck of a speech recorder.) The Entertainment Weekly photos are largely OK – they’re simply random stills of individuals hanging about, as if they’re being followed by a serial killer dressed up in a poor Halloween costume. The filmmakers and producers’ behind-the-scenes picture is important since it shows Kevin Williamson with gray hair, emphasizing how long this series has been around; remember when he was the new kid at the horror table? The same can be said about David Arquette, who played a boyish-looking deputy in the first picture but now resembles a grizzly outdoorsman. I really like that picture of Ghostface; it shows how legendary he has become that all we need to see him standing in a corridor, no knife needed, to feel aroused. Melissa Barrera is wearing one of the same costumes Sidney wore in Scream 2, or something similar to it, in the photo of her standing at the doorway, if I’m not wrong. Does this imply that she is the primary newcomer? Is this a hint that Scream-5-Which-Is-Just-Called-Scream will include a lot of references to the previous films? It’s a pity they didn’t release this in time for Halloween, but a chilly January night may be just as scary.

What are your thoughts on the new Scream poster? Do the pictures from Entertainment Weekly appeal to you?
