The Ryzen 7 3700X is the latest iteration of AMD’s flagship processor, and it promises to deliver a significant performance boost over its predecessor. We put the chip through its paces in games, benchmarks, and synthetic tests to see if this new CPU is worth the hype.
The ryzen 5 5600x vs ryzen 7 3700x is a comparison between the AMD Ryzen 5 5600X and the AMD Ryzen 7 3700X.
Introduction
Today, we’ll evaluate the performance of the AMD 3700X Ryzen 7 Matisse and AMD 5800X Ryzen 7 Vermeer CPUs. We conducted a comprehensive review of AMD’s Ryzen 7 3700X CPU, which is built on the Zen 2 architecture, when it was released in September of 2019. After giving the CPU more time to develop and receiving new BIOS updates, we revisited the Ryzen 7 3700X CPU in July 2024 and directly compared it to the Ryzen 7 2700X.
In a similar vein, we’ll be doing the same thing with AMD’s Ryzen 5000 series CPUs, which are based on the Zen 3 architecture and were launched in November of 2024. We’ll be doing a series of reviews, beginning with this one, which will look at the performance of Ryzen 5000 series CPUs in 2024. Today’s review is a “versus” kind of comparison, comparing the Ryzen 7 3700X against the Ryzen 7 5800X in 2024.
There has been a lot of BIOS maturity and AGESA upgrades now that the Zen 3 based CPUs have been available for a year. After a long period of maturation, the Ryzen 5000 series CPUs have reached the pinnacle of their performance. As a result, there’s no better time than now to evaluate how these CPUs stack up against one another in the autumn of 2024, a year after the Ryzen 5000 series launched.
Since November of 2024, we’ve been utilizing the Ryzen 7 5800X CPU in our GPU test bench for all video card evaluations. It’s now time to look at the CPU performance in detail and compare it to the Ryzen 7 3700X from the previous generation. Expect further reviews on the Ryzen 5 5600X, Ryzen 9 5900X, and Ryzen 9 5950X, as well as the Ryzen 5 5600X performance.
Specifications for AMD Ryzen 7 5800X
Today, we’ll look at the performance of the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X desktop CPU and compare it to the Ryzen 7 3700X. The AMD Ryzen 7 5800X had an MSRP of $449 when it was released in November of 2024. This CPU is based on AMD’s newer Zen 3 architecture, which replaces the Zen 2 architecture that the Ryzen 7 3700X was built on, and operates on the socket AM4. One of the most significant benefits of Zen 3 over Zen 2 is the +19% increase in instructions per cycle (IPC) compared to Zen 2 CPUs. This involves reorganizing the cores in the CCX complexes, as well as the layout of the CCDs, within the package to improve cache performance. The delay involved in cache performance between the CCXs and cores was one of the main drawbacks of the Zen 2 design. The Zen 3 design significantly improves this scenario and eliminates these problems, while also lowering cache latency.
The AMD Ryzen 5000 Series has undergone major design modifications at the SoC architectural level, in addition to significant advancements inside the “Zen 3” microarchitecture. Whereas the “Zen 2”/”Matisse” product had a combination of two core complexes (CCX) per compute die (CCD), each with 4C8T and 16MB of L3 cache, the “Zen 3”/”Vermeer” product now has a unified complex with up to 8C16T and 32MB L3 cache on each CCD.
On the next page, we’ll offer you comprehensive press presentation materials that go through the Zen 3 architecture in great depth. Below is a comparison of the Ryzen 7 5800X specs versus the Ryzen 7 3700X specifications.
Specification | Ryzen 7 5800X | Ryzen 7 3700X |
---|---|---|
Architecture | Vermeer / Zen 3 | Matisse / Zen 2 |
Node for processing | CCD 7nm/12nm IOD | CCD 7nm/12nm IOD |
Cores/Threads | 8/16 | 8/16 |
Cache L2+L3 | L2/32MB L3 (L2/32MB L3 (4MB L2/32MB L3)) | 4MB L2/32MB L3 |
Frequency of the base | 3.8GHz | 3.6GHz |
Frequency of Maximum Boost | 4.7GHz | 4.4GHz |
TDP | 105W | 65W |
MSRP | $449 | $329 |
The Ryzen 7 5800X is an 8-core CPU with SMT that supports 16 threads, making it an 8-core/16-thread CPU. It’s based on AMD’s Zen 3 architecture and made using TSMC’s 7nm process. It features an L2 cache of 4MB and an L3 cache of 32MB. It has one CCD and one IOD. With a TDP of 105W, the base frequency is 3.8GHz and the maximum boost frequency is 4.7GHz.
The Ryzen 7 5800X and Ryzen 7 3700X are both built on the AMD AM4 socket architecture and seem to be similar. The CPUs are identical in size and z-height, and you wouldn’t be able to tell them differently if it weren’t for the writing. However, since their TDPs are so different, you may want to use a larger cooler with the Ryzen 7 5800X to get the most out of it. The Ryzen 7 5800X’s increased 105W TDP compared to the Ryzen 7 3700X’s 65W TDP is a fact of this CPU, and the temperature does run considerably hotter.
Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO) capability, which can be activated in the BIOS as an overclocking technique boosting boost clocks by up to 200MHz, is another feature of the Ryzen 5000 series CPUs. Since our overclocking results, we’ll use PBO on the Ryzen 7 5800X enabled in our BIOS, as this is the CPU’s approved overclocking technique. These are the “PBO” findings that you’ll see on our graphs.
Precision Boost Overdrive is still supported and implemented in the AMD Ryzen 3000 Series CPUs as intended. PPT, TDC, and EDC limitations are increased automatically to meet the VRM capabilities given by the BIOS settings of the particular motherboard. Workloads that may be throttled by current or socket power might keep increasing until another limiter kicks in. The AutoOC function allows users to override boost by up to 200MHz.
The ryzen 7 3800x vs ryzen 7 5800x reddit is a comparison of the two AMD Ryzen CPUs. It shows that the 3700X has better performance than the 3800X.
